Let’s start with defining the word.

Con·fi·dence: a feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something

We’ve all spent hours scouring the internet, creeping on amazing photographers and wondering how they got where they are, becoming increasingly jealous of their skills. I know that I sure have (ahem… Paint the Moon Photography). I would sit there confused and frustrated just wanting to know their secrets.

In the current digital age there are millions of aspiring photographers who just want to stand out and get noticed. I can assure you- buying a big fancy (dslr) camera, the newest lenses and Photoshop isn’t going to get you there. So what is one to do?

Get out there and PRACTICE all the time! I feel like I can’t say this enough. Seems simple right? Still, people wait for clients to come knocking down their door or take pictures of their cat. I mean… cat pictures are great but practicing on people gives you not only experience working with your camera but also understanding of how to apply your knowledge immediately. When you try new skills out right away, the quicker you’re able to adjust what does and doesn’t work. Clients will come later. You want to start out with a good base or else your business will crumble later on. Talent built on strong foundation will last longer when challenged.

I first started about 4 years ago in my high school photography class. I knew immediately that I wanted to photograph people, to suspend a moment of someone’s beauty. It’s absolutely thrilling to me. Luckily, I have three beautiful little sisters that I could take out on photo shoots all the time. If you don’t have sisters, grab some friends! I’ve been on tons of shoots at this point and it’s been such a HUGE learning curve!  In college my friend Haley is my go-to person for new projects and ideas. I’m pretty sure I have more pictures of her than anyone else in my life. Working together has helped develop my personal style, client communication skills and CONFIDENCE! I’ve chosen a few friends that I take out on shoots often so I can keep moving forward in my craft. I try to keep it down to the same people so I don’t have everyone requesting free work. I don’t wait on clients to go out and take pictures.

Every photographer goes through periods of wanting to quit due to feeling adequate from comparison. I’ve definitely have had my fair share of tears spilt over feeling like my work wasn’t good enough. Just please, don’t quit! It always gets better.

P.s- I posted some images from my practice shoots with Haley

I hope this helps!

xoxo
